An Ode To Slip Dresses

Does anyone else get visions of what they want to look like for the season, for an event or even for a distant time in your life.

For example I have my “success outfits.” Whenever I think about that time in my future where I’m making 200,000$ a year and having lunch meetings with Issa Rae and Michael B Jordan I’m always wearing all white. Don’t ask me why, I don’t even consciously think about it, I just…have on white.

So, this spring/summer I kept envisioning myself wearing cute and sexy slip dresses. I was scrolling on Instagram and a girl posted about a gold slip dress she bought on sale on Bohoo.com. So I went to the website and went HAM. I bought 7 dresses for 120$!!! Thats so good right?!

I was in heaven. Aside from the obvious good deal that I got, I was so happy because I’ve had a love for slip dresses for some time now. Even before they got super trendy (which I’m happy about because they are more accessible). I don’t know how many women ran to buy slip dresses in 1998 when Carrie Bradshaw wore “the naked dress” but after I saw the infamous episode in 2012, I was obsessed.

The slip dress is perfect because it is everything you need with the most simple silhouette. You need to be sexy, throw on heels with red lipstick.

Dress it down with sneakers.

Be casual with laryered necklaces and sandals, or edgy with combat boots.

We can even put leggings and a turtleneck under it and give Traces Ellis Ross vibes.

My favorite thing to be is effortlessly sexy. Messy hair, sneakers, lots of jewelry and a pop of color lipstick. And I’ve never seen a slip dress that wasn’t comfortable. It is perfect and timeless.

Women are complex and that is our magic. We are strong and lively, that requires many versions of ourselves. A slip dress is a suitable canvass for us to live in, so that we may paint on whatever version of ourselves we need to be whenever we need to be it. A suit of armor that helps us be our best most magical selves.
